WATER DROPLET PLATE

the materials used and design

The wood choice here was Purple Heart for the Droplet and Ash for the base plate, the wood choice was simple and revolved around the fact that I wanted two contrasting colours to make the look. The base was easily made from a blank I had bought from Duffield Timber and the centre piece was from wood acquired in Scotland, I forget the actual location or supplier but it was a pen blank.

Making waves

The eventual making of the dish was simple enough and started with a straight cut along the surface, with a slight hump in the middle of the surface so as to help with the shaping in the later stages. Using a 1/4” bowl gouge, I shaped each of the ripples on the surface of the piece, ensuring to try and give it as natural a shape as possible, this was made easier by finding reference pictures.

The foot

Finding the correct footing for this project was a simple decision due to the shape of the top, I did it want to take anything from the overall design of the platter, but compliment it without it taking over. So I decided to go for a bevelled edge and undercut to help it give depth to the fluid look within the top section. This was then finished with a thin rim like edge for the whole thing to sit on and give lift to it.
